Where Education Meets Opportunity
At Advancing Students Forward, we believe that access to education is just the beginning and financial aid alone is not enough to disrupt generational cycles of poverty. True change requires consistent, personalized support that surrounds students and families with opportunity, encouragement, and accountability. ASF makes a 10+ year commitment to each of our students, and they make the same commitment to the program. ASF’s Student Success Approach addresses six essential focus areas that help students succeed—academically, emotionally, and socially.
Providing access to education is a fundamental need and the guiding principle on which ASF was founded. Each student receives a tailored financial scholarship to help cover critical school-related expenses. Rather than covering all expenses, scholarships provide support to ease the financial burden while encouraging families to remain invested in their child’s success. In return, students commit to regular participation in ASF programming—including leadership development and peer support—creating a model of mutual responsibility and shared investment.
Monthly student meetings help build strong academic habits and reinforce the value of education. Parents are included in the process, ensuring families stay engaged and understand the importance of long-term commitment. Students are required to maintain their grades and submit report cards twice a year. ASF also connects students with peer tutors and invites Afiliados (ASF alumni) to share real-world advice and encouragement, reinforcing a culture of success and perseverance.
Students grow within a strong, supportive cohort model that fosters accountability, friendship, and shared goals. This sense of belonging helps students stay engaged and motivated—especially when navigating the pressures of being the first in their family to pursue higher education. Enrichment opportunities like field trips, job-site tours, and volunteer opportunities introduce students to the world beyond their neighborhood and show them what’s possible. These experiences expand their horizons, deepen their curiosity, and help them see Tijuana as a dynamic and opportunity-rich community.
ASF cultivates more than academic success—we build confidence, self-awareness, and leadership. Through our three-year rotating curriculum of program themes—Self-Esteem, Communication, and Goal-Setting—students gain life skills that strengthen their personal agency and prepare them to be thoughtful, proactive contributors to their communities.
Students gain practical leadership skills through public speaking training, mentorship opportunities, and ASF’s Afiliados Program, where alumni return to support current students. By stepping into roles of guidance and influence, students begin to see themselves as leaders. Our efforts not only empower individual students to achieve academic success but also strengthen the social and economic fabric of the entire community. ASF is investing in future leaders who will uplift their families and drive meaningful change within their community. As these students succeed, they break cycles of poverty and open doors for others, creating a ripple effect that strengthens Colonia Tecolote today and for generations to come. This multi-generational impact fosters a community with greater resources, resilience, and shared prosperity, demonstrating that education is a powerful force for long-term transformation.
ASF provides transformative experiences that help students develop self-awareness, confidence, and resilience. For many, the journey of pursuing an education is not just academic—it is deeply personal. As the first in their families to attend school, these trailblazing students face immense mental and emotional challenges. They carry the weight of family expectations while simultaneously feeling a growing disconnect from their roots. Breaking generational cycles can be isolating, leaving them caught between two worlds —one they come from and one they are striving to enter. Many struggle with self-doubt, questioning whether they truly belong. Thoughts of “This is not for me” or feelings of imposter syndrome can take hold, making their path even more daunting. ASF ensures students have both a physical and mental space where they can focus on their strengths, process the complexities of their journey, and embrace their potential.
